Elsa Schiaparelli..... ...
Over the years, so much has been written about the relationship between the fashion and perfume industries, and we haven't met a perfume collector who doesn't love the bottles introduced by their favorite designer!
Perfume Passage has embraced this obvious connection through our many displays of perfumes and vanity items launched by fashion designers throughout the 20th century.

For this issue, we'd like to share the perfumes and accessories by one of our favorite designers, Elsa Schiaparelli.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey and Rusty, Co-founders

Meeting Serge...
Click on picture to read the full article.
One of our favorite ways to preserve the history, beauty and artistry of perfume bottles is when we've had the opportunity to meet the perfumers, designers and artists who created the bottles that are part of our collection.

Unfortunately, these can be fleeting moments, and we do treasure each opportunity we've had over the years.
In 2006, we met French artist and perfume bottle designer Serge Mansau. We were aware of his bottle designs, but not of him as the artist. We realize that others might not be familiar with Serge as the designer of bottles they love, yet they most likely own one or more of his creations!

So for this issue, we thought we'd share our stories about Serge, his bottles and their history!

Sincerely,
Jeffrey and Rusty, Co-founders

It's Mardi Gras...
Click on picture to read the full article.
Did you know that the word Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday? This day is the final day of celebrations before Ash Wednesday, when the season of Lent starts. And did you also know that the time between the Epiphany--January 6th, or Three Kings Day, is not only the end of the 12 days of Christmas; it's also the start of Carnival?

Whichever name you use for these six weeks in 2024 (February 13 to March 31), they are celebrated throughout the world with parades and beads, masked balls with costumes, elaborate dinners and of course, family traditions.

Perfume Lamp History...

A Note From The Founders...

We began collecting mens fragrances many many years ago. And like most collectors, we soon branched out, searching for other perfume related items that piqued our interest.

We always loved items that served a dual purpose and once we learned about perfume lamps and burners, we knew we found our next collecting category!
What better time to enjoy the aromas from a perfume lamp or perfume burner than the winter months? We hope you enjoy the aromatic history of some of our favorite collectibles in this issue.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey and Rusty, Co-founders

The Beginnings of Bottles...

A Note From The Founders...

We enjoyed the “Go Figure” symposium at our recent IPBA convention, seeing all the fun figural perfume presentations in a variety of categories.

Who knew you could dab or spritz from a bottle shaped like a shoe, lamp or pair of dice!
Of course it got us thinking about all of the novelty perfume bottles and figural compacts in our collection.

So for this issue, we thought we'd share Perfume Passage's perfume bottles and compacts that are shaped like something else!
Sincerely,
Jeffrey and Rusty, Co-founders

The Deco Gallery...
Click on picture to read the full article.
A Note From The Founders...

The Art Deco era has always been very special to us for its architectural and design elements. The straight and smooth lines, heavy geometric shapes and sleek forms created the perfect balance in what we feel is the most glamorous time in history.

And of course our collecting interests feature perfumes, compacts and vanity items that reflect the deco style.
In January 2021 our PassageWAY eNews highlighted the Deco gallery at Perfume Passage. We've added to our deco collection and displays and so we thought we'd share the changes and additions in this issue!
Sincerely,

Planes, Trains & Automobiles...

Planes, Trains and Automobiles was a 1987 comedy film that starred actors Steve Martin and John Candy. While we don't remember watching the movie, the title is catchy and sums up the most popular modes of transportation.

We've shared many of the travel souvenir vanity items on display at Perfume Passage, along with our recent European adventures in the June and July PassageWAYs. So it makes sense that we end the summer months sharing the fun and unusual planes, trains and automobile vanity items we also have on display!
And of course we have other transportation themed items, who knew there could be so many!

Let's Go to Europe...
Click on picture to read the full article.
Of the seven continents, Europe ranks sixth in size, spanning 3.8 million square miles and comes in at third in population rankings with 746 million people.

Did you also know that Europe includes both the largest and smallest nations in the world? Out of 44 European countries, Russia at 6.6 million square miles is the biggest and Vatican City is the smallest at under two square miles!
We get it! Europe is a large continent, with so many "must-see" sights and cities. You can spend several days in each country or city and still not absorb all the history or visit all the tourist attractions highlighted in the guide books.

So when we planned our first post-Covid extended European trip, we decided to limit ourselves to London and Paris, two of our favorite cities.

On the Road Again...
Road trip! - The words can evoke fond memories for many of us -- station wagons, campgrounds, family trips and squabbles about who had to sit next to the sibling who always got car sick!

We all remember that a favorite part of traveling and exploring by car, bus and train was collecting souvenirs along the way.
Today the vanity related souvenir items that were purchased many years ago are highly collectible. While the compacts were probably purchased to use and the perfumes to wear, they often ended up in a drawer or box as a memento of the fun trip.

Maybe you visited tourist attractions or attended special events and bought a vanity item that are still part of your collection? Please share!

Wedding History...
What once began as financial transactions with guests as witnesses, making them legitimate contracts, weddings have evolved into elaborate celebrations regardless of culture, religion or tradition.

The earliest wedding is said to have taken place over 4000 years ago and before that, families were considered groups of about 30 people with several leaders and shared partners.

From the Beginning...
Jeffrey's interest in perfumes started in his junior year of college as he spent a semester studying abroad in Madrid. While buying school supplies he wandered into the fragrance section of a department store and purchased a Spanish cologne called "Campos de Ibiza," that he liked. He wore it the entire time he was in Spain and when he returned to the US, packed the bottle away.
"I discovered the bottle three years later when I was moving, and the moment I smelled the cologne, memories of my time and friendships in Spain came flooding back to me. I wondered how a fragrance could do that, so I began to learn about the history of perfumes and also became fascinated with the artistry of the bottles and packaging," Jeffrey explained.

Early Solids...
The history of solid perfumes can be traced to ancient Egyptian times when scents were often created using beeswax and fragrant oils. It's been said that Cleopatra concocted a mix of spices and oils, pouring them into ceramic amphoras that could be refilled and used again.
Cleopatra understood the power of perfume's universal allure over 2000 years ago, famously lavishing her suitors with the scent of roses. She is depicting on the mural in the Vault gallery (above).

Centuries ago public odors were smoke, open sewers and rotting food and all were a definite assault to our nose! It was no wonder that both men and women were looking for fragrant potions out of a matter of necessity.

Early Men's Scents...
Click on picture to read the full article.
Perfumes, especially men's fragrances, have certainly evolved since ancient times.

Centuries ago public odors were smoke, open sewers and rotting food and all were a definite assault to our nose! It was no wonder that both men and women were looking for fragrant potions out of a matter of necessity.

Obviously, bathing is the best choice when we want to smell good and be clean, but throughout history the basic activity of bathing wasn't a reality for many.

While there were soaps sold in salons and perfumeries, many were also home made using pungent and dangerous ingredients. So it seemed to make sense that using fragrance was a preferred and easier method to cover up body odors.

The holiday season is celebrated in many different ways, and it's all about family and friends. And of course, perfumes and vanity items!

We didn't realize the variety of holiday themed items we've collected over the years until we started to unpack and organize them for our seasonal displays.

Like all collectibles, holiday themed perfumes and vanity items can also fit into specific collecting categories. Bottles, compacts, powders and ephemera are just a few categories that are included in the Perfume Passage holiday collection that are on display throughout the galleries.

When Deborah began searching for the filigree items, the internet and eBay became her new best friends, and her knowledge, along with her collection grew. In 2003 she led a round table discussion on filigree jeweled bottles and vanity items at the Orlando convention.
She continued researching the companies that manufactured these items with the intention of writing a book one day.

One of the new displays at Perfume Passage includes items from Deborah's brassy and jeweled vanity collection. We have also continued her research and have uncovered additional information on their history and the companies that manufactured them.

Read All About It....
We know that libraries are spaces that hold a collection of books. They protect books, celebrate books and make the books available to anyone who wants to read them.

The library at Perfume Passage does all that and more! Located on the lower level, the entry to the library is through the outside courtyard or through the hallway near the elevator.
Once inside, the shelves and shelves of books, magazines and catalogs will invite you in to spend time researching and learning. For perfume and vanity aficionados, the library is like no other, as the majority of materials relate to the items that we collect and can be found throughout the galleries!

The Power of the Powder!

"Using the Powder Room" and "Powdering your Nose"
Both phrases were early 20th century euphemisms that referred to a ladies' bathroom in a public place and why a lady needed to go there!

We know ladies really used face powders, and the beautiful cardboard boxes that held the messy loose powder would adorn her vanity table.
Perfume Passage has a collection of cardboard powder boxes whose graphics can be considered miniature works of art! On your next visit to the galleries you'll see powder boxes and perfumes by the same companies that used the same scent.

Spring 2021
Welcome to the second publication of Perfume Passage Journal.

For this issue, we chose an interesting French company whose designs and creativity captured the imagination of Parisians and visitors from around the world during the 1920s. We are thrilled to share the history of Robj and its amazing oeuvre of glass and porcelain fragrance burners, lamps, lighters, decanters, bibelots and perfumes.

We celebrate the 1920s-30s and the social, economic, and cultural events that took place during these years. It is the decade that brought us the most iconic perfume in history, Chanel No. 5. As the 100th Anniversary of this iconic perfume approaches, we are working on an article in collaboration with Giorgio Dalla Villa and Daniela Candio from the Museo del Profumo in Milan, Italy. You will find a teaser in the magazine and we look forward to sharing the story of this incredible fragrance and its impact on society in a future Journal.

Autumn 2020
The Perfume Passage Foundation has published our very first magazine, Perfume Passage Journal.  This inaugural issue is dedicated to the Italian perfume company, Rudy Profumi which is celebrating its centennial.
It was founded in 1920 and continues to operate today under the management of third and fourth generation family members.

We embarked on this mission in collaboration with Museo di Profumo in Milan, who shared a wealth of information on the Rudy Profumi Company.

In each edition of Perfume Passage Journal, you will find articles that document the known history of a specific subject available in our collection. Each Journal will serve as a digital archive on a topic or theme, and when new information or images are discovered, they will be added to the publication archives.

The artifacts represented in the Journal can be found in exhibits in our galleries at Perfume Passage. We hope that once we're able to re-open for tours, you'll plan a visit to admire the whimsical figural perfumes by Rudy Profumi!

The American Barbershop

Shave and a haircut - two bits!
The nostalgic barbershop inspired call and response reminds many little boys of the times they accompanied their fathers to the barber for a haircut and shave.
While those who could afford perfume were usually concerned with their appearance and fashion accessories, the sanitary standards of the day was most likely the deciding choice to douse one's self with scent!

As we recently celebrated Father's Day, we hope the barbershop windows in the Passageway will not only offer you a glimpse into the past, but will evoke fond memories at the same time.

Enjoy learning about the history of the barbershop as early barbers were known for much more than cutting hair, acting as surgeons, dentists and religious officials as well.

What Can Be Devoured or Worn As a Fashion Accessory?
The first mention of a perfumer being recorded was in ancient Mesopotamia. We know that the ancient Egyptians used scents in all aspects of their lives from religious ceremonies to burial rituals. Perfume wearers also conveyed their social status by wearing fragrances--lily was a popular scent.
While those who could afford perfume were usually concerned with their appearance and fashion accessories, the sanitary standards of the day was most likely the deciding choice to douse one's self with scent!

One of the IPBA's founding members, Joyce Geeser, began collecting early perfume bottles, vinaigrettes and pomanders after first finding some perfume bottles at a local garage sale in the 1970s.

There is More to That Cane
That Meets the Eye!

What do Charlie Chaplin, Willy Wonka and Winston Churchill have in common?
They were almost never seen without their canes!
We know that a cane is a stick or short staff that is used to assist with walking. However, did you know that from the mid 1500s through the 1930s, canes were considered an accessory item that "proper" ladies and gentlemen wouldn't consider leaving the house without one.
Canes, also called walking sticks, weren't intended to be used as much as worn. They could be hand-carved from wood, bamboo, ivory, bone or animal horn. Sometimes they were made of porcelain, Bakelite (plastic), gold, silver or even glass. They could be enameled and embedded with gemstones.

Beauty is only Skin Deep

Cosmetics have a fascinating history, as beauty ideals have changed dramatically over the last few centuries.
The word cosmetic is derived from the Greek word kosmein, which means to decorate or to adorn. When the ancient Egyptian tombs were excavated, archaeologists discovered Kohl containers, some made of ivory, bone and wood.
Kohl was a black mineral used to embellish eye lashes and eye lids. In addition to a cosmetic that was applied with a spoon or stick, kohl could protect from insects that caused eye diseases as well as shielding eyes from the hot desert sun.
